This Week In CloseBrace - 8/25/17

My first full week after vacation allowed me to get caught back up on tutorials (and in fact pull ahead, again), make some tweaks to the site that will be rolling out soon, do some article work, and sharpen my plans for what I'm going to focus on this fall. Also, of course, there are new tutorials for you to check out. Let's get into things!

Tutorials first. We've got Five Minute React 45 - Wiring Up Log-In Part 1, in which we get started tying our React app to our Express API so that we can log users in without having to use a third party program to do it. We follow that up with the appropriately-named Five Minute React 46 - Wiring Up Log-In Part 2, in which finish up the first phase, which allows us to see our login working ... albeit only in our browser's dev tools.

But have no fear! Next week, we'll have Five Minute React 47 - Wiring Up Log-In Part 3, in which we create Redux actions and reducers so that our app state is updated when a user logs in. We'll follow that up with Five Minute React 48 - Displaying User Information, in which we display information from the logged-in user in our header (and also finally turn our loading spinner into an actual spinner). I also managed to write and record a third tutorial this week, so I'm back to three ahead. That feels like a comfortable spot for me with no major vacations looming for a while, so I'm going to stick with that, which should give a little room for development / site changes.

On that note, I did manage to do a little development this week. Mostly what I was working on was making sure that inline code (stuff that looks like this: for (let i = 0; i < arr.length; i++)) stand out much more on the site than they currently do, both in tutorial text and in comments. The big blocks of code look fine, but small snippets stuck into normal sentences only change font right now, and it's not enough of a visual difference. I've got a few more tweaks to make there but hope to get it live either later today or on Monday.

When it comes to articles, I finished my JavaScript History article. I'm holding off on launching it until after Labor Day for two reasons. 1: I want to add a few more things to the website before it goes live. 2: I want to make sure as many people see it as possible! I also wrote most of a "What the Heck is MusicList?" article, because I think now that the Five Minute React series has so many parts, it might be useful to newcomers, and possibly even veterans, to know what it is they're building. That one will get finished up and go live next week.

That's it for this week, but I hope you'll agree that's a pretty solid week! I hope everyone has a great weekend.
