This Week In CloseBrace - February 2nd, 2018

This week started with catastrophe, but ended pretty well! I didn't post any new tutorials, as I'm currently in prep/build mode for a couple of new series, but I did get a lot of stuff done. Let's talk about it.

Upgrades, Fixes, and Server Admin

I began the week by making an upgrade to my CMS for security reasons. This required me to upgrade my version of Node. This broke my blog, which was running on an old version of Ghost because for reasons that I incredibly strongly disagree with the Ghost team version-locks their releases. The blog breaking took down the front-page of CloseBrace because I wrote some bad code that didn't fail gracefully when it encountered an error.

SO … I spent the first two days of the week putting out all of those fires. Ghost is now running on a newer and more-easily-upgradeable version that's compatible with the latest long-term-stable release of Node. The front page of CloseBrace now continues to display even if the blog feed fails. Keystone is upgraded.

The moral of this story is: I really don't like server administration and it's very likely I'll be moving CloseBrace and the blog to a more managed, PAAS environment in the future. Either that or hiring a server admin … but that's not in the budget right now.

Changes and Improvements

I'm taking this opportunity where I'm not writing / recording / editing multiple videos per week to make some changes to the site. For one thing, I'm reorganizing the tutorial index to be way less intimidating and much more visually appealing. I'm also going to redesign the homepage. Smaller tweaks include probably removing the twitter widget (it's too busy) and possibly the entire sidebar. I'm also thinking about ditching the sans-serif font and making some other text adjustments. Some of these will be rolling live pretty soon, while others may take a few weeks.

Tutorial Planning

I've had almost exactly the same number of requests for Vue.js and for React Native. I'm going to do both, but I'm trying to decide which one I want to tackle first. Recent discussions have pushed me toward React Native, so I expect to start researching that and figuring out what I'm going to cover next week.

In the meantime, if you're not on my newsletter, you should definitely sign up! I send a "JS Quick Hit" micro-tutorial to your Inbox every Friday. I'm going to begin releasing those on CloseBrace soon, too, but they'll always come out a week later than they did in the newsletter, so if you want 'em piping hot, that's the place to be.

… That's about all I've got this week. See you next Friday with more news!
